Guwahati: Turning waste into a usable resource has emerged as a key focus of Assam’s urban cleanliness efforts, with Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Kaushik Rai visiting the Boragaon waste disposal site in Guwahati and holding a review meeting with senior officials.
The visit was aimed at assessing existing waste-management practices and exploring ways to improve the reuse, recycling and scientific utilisation of waste generated in the city.
During the review, officials discussed measures to strengthen the processing of recyclable materials and make better use of combustible waste. The emphasis was on developing more sustainable approaches to waste management rather than relying solely on disposal.
Focus on Waste Reuse and Recycling
The discussions at Boragaon centred on improving the overall management of municipal waste, including greater recovery of materials that can be reused or recycled.
Officials also examined the potential for more effective utilisation of combustible waste, an approach that can help reduce the volume of waste ultimately requiring disposal while improving resource recovery.
The review forms part of wider efforts to strengthen Guwahati’s solid-waste management system and move towards a cleaner and more environmentally sustainable city.
Senior GMC and Department Officials Attend
The minister’s visit was attended by Guwahati Municipal Corporation Mayor Mrigen Sarania, along with Dr. Jeevan B, IAS, Secretary to the Government of Assam, Department of Housing and Urban Affairs.
Chinmoy Prakash Phookan, ACS, Commissioner of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation, was also present at the review meeting, along with other officials.
The participation of senior officials from the Housing and Urban Affairs Department and GMC underlined the importance being given to improving waste management and civic cleanliness in Guwahati.
Towards a Cleaner Guwahati
The Boragaon review comes as Guwahati continues to strengthen its waste-management infrastructure and promote better segregation, recycling and resource recovery.
The civic authorities’ focus on reuse, recycling and waste-to-resource practices is aimed at reducing the city’s dependence on conventional waste disposal and supporting a more sustainable municipal waste-management system.
The initiative also aligns with the broader objective of building a cleaner, greener and more waste-efficient Guwahati through improved infrastructure, technology and administrative coordination.
