Guwahati, July 23: The Assam Legislative Assembly on Thursday suspended Raijor Dal president and Sibsagar MLA Akhil Gogoi for the remainder of the day’s proceedings after a dispute with Speaker Ranjit Kumar Dass during a debate over the state’s flood situation.
The incident occurred on the tenth day of the ongoing Budget Session when Gogoi sought permission to invoke Rule 56 to suspend the listed business and initiate an urgent discussion on the flood crisis affecting Charaideo, Sivasagar, and Jorhat districts.
Assembly proceedings turned contentious after the Speaker ruled that the legislator had exceeded the time allotted for his submission. As the exchange intensified, Speaker Dass observed that Gogoi’s conduct was disrupting the functioning of the House and ordered his suspension for the rest of Thursday’s sitting.
Following the suspension, Gogoi told reporters outside the Assembly that his intention was to highlight the hardships faced by people in the flood-affected districts. He alleged that he was not allowed to complete his submission despite raising what he described as an urgent humanitarian concern.
The Raijor Dal leader further appealed to the Assam Government to declare the ongoing floods a natural calamity and seek additional financial assistance from the Central Government to strengthen relief and rehabilitation efforts for affected communities.
The developments unfolded as flood-hit districts across Upper Assam continue to grapple with extensive damage, with concerns over relief, rehabilitation, and restoration of essential infrastructure remaining at the forefront of public discourse.
