Guwahati, October 9, 2026: The Assam Cabinet has approved a nominal land premium of just ₹1 for four bighas of land allotted to Olympic medallist Lovlina Borgohain for establishing a boxing academy near Guwahati. The initiative aims to strengthen sports infrastructure in Assam and provide aspiring boxers with quality training facilities.

Education Minister Ranoj Pegu announced the Cabinet’s decision on Friday following a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma at Lok Sewa Bhawan in Guwahati. The land is located under the Palasbari Revenue Circle and will be used to establish the proposed Lovlina Boxing Academy.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the academy would help young athletes access better training opportunities and develop the skills needed to compete at national and international levels. The initiative is intended to nurture future boxing champions from Assam and enable more athletes to represent India on the international stage.

The proposed academy is expected to provide a dedicated training environment for emerging boxers, helping them develop their techniques, physical fitness and competitive abilities. The project also highlights the state government’s efforts to expand sporting opportunities and support athletes who have achieved recognition at the highest levels of competition.

Lovlina Borgohain is one of India’s leading boxers and a prominent sporting figure from Assam. She won a bronze medal in boxing at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, bringing international recognition to the state.

She further strengthened her sporting achievements by winning gold in the women’s 75kg boxing category at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. Her performance earned her recognition from the Assam government following her return to Guwahati.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma felicitated Borgohain and presented her with a cheque for ₹50 lakh in recognition of her Asian Games gold medal. The state government also promoted her to the post of Additional Superintendent of Police.

The proposed boxing academy is expected to build on Borgohain’s achievements by creating opportunities for young athletes to pursue professional boxing. With dedicated training facilities and access to coaching, the centre could help identify and prepare promising talent from Assam for future sporting competitions.

The Cabinet’s approval of a nominal ₹1 land premium for the four-bigha plot marks an important administrative step towards establishing the academy. The project is expected to contribute to Assam’s sports development efforts and inspire more young people to pursue careers in competitive boxing.
