Silchar: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has expelled 15 party leaders and workers for a period of three years, citing alleged violations of party discipline and non-compliance with organisational directives.
The disciplinary order was issued on September 15 by APCC General Secretary (Organisation) Ramanna Barua following the direction of Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi.
The action comes amid differences within the party over the selection of candidates for the Silchar Municipal Corporation election. Tensions reportedly surfaced following protests against the Congress candidate selected for Ward No. 27.
During the protests, a section of Congress workers allegedly vandalised property at the Cachar District Congress Bhawan. The incident has added to the internal disagreement surrounding the candidate selection.
The allegations regarding the vandalism have not been independently verified.
The three-year expulsion is the latest disciplinary action by the state Congress leadership as the party deals with internal differences ahead of the municipal election.
