In a major breakthrough against drug trafficking, Assam Police seized narcotics worth approximately ₹21.36 crore during a joint anti-drug operation carried out in Amingaon under Kamrup district. The operation was conducted jointly by Kamrup Police and Special Task Force Assam following specific intelligence inputs.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared details of the operation through a post on X, describing it as a successful intelligence-based crackdown under the state government’s ongoing anti-narcotics campaign, #AssamAgainstDrugs.
According to official sources, the operation was launched after security agencies received information about a suspected drug consignment being transported through Assam from a neighbouring state. Acting swiftly on the intelligence, police teams intercepted a bus in the Amingaon area and conducted a thorough search of the vehicle.
During the search operation, officials recovered approximately 2.5 kilograms of heroin and 8 kilograms of opium concealed inside the bus. Authorities estimate the total market value of the seized narcotics at around ₹21.36 crore in the illegal drug market.
Police also arrested five individuals in connection with the case. Investigators are currently questioning the accused to determine the origin of the consignment, the intended destination, and possible links to larger interstate or international drug trafficking networks.
Officials stated that the seizure highlights the increasing use of interstate transport routes by narcotics smugglers attempting to move illegal substances through the Northeast region. Assam’s strategic geographical location has made it a crucial transit corridor for drug trafficking networks operating across borders and neighbouring states.
The Assam government has intensified its crackdown on narcotics over the past few years, with law enforcement agencies conducting regular raids, interceptions, and intelligence-led operations across the state. Under the “War Against Drugs” initiative, police have seized large quantities of heroin, opium, cannabis, and synthetic drugs while arresting several traffickers and dismantling multiple drug networks.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has repeatedly emphasized the government’s commitment to making Assam drug-free and has praised police and STF personnel for their continued efforts against organized narcotics operations. The latest seizure is being viewed as another significant achievement in the state’s anti-drug campaign.
Security agencies are now expected to expand the investigation to identify the wider supply chain and trace individuals connected to the trafficking network. Officials believe the arrested suspects may have links to larger syndicates involved in the illegal narcotics trade across the region.
The operation once again underlines the growing focus of Assam Police on intelligence-driven enforcement measures aimed at curbing drug smuggling and protecting youth from the impact of narcotics abuse.
