Guwahati: In a major relief measure for flood-hit households, the Assam government on Monday began transferring ₹15,000 as interim financial assistance to eligible families across the worst-affected districts of Upper Assam. The financial aid is intended to provide immediate support to people rebuilding their homes and livelihoods after the recent floods.
The first phase of the assistance was launched by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma from Dibrugarh during his ongoing visit to flood-affected areas. Before leaving for Sivasagar to inspect relief and rehabilitation work, the Chief Minister initiated the direct transfer of funds to beneficiaries under the state’s flood relief package.
Addressing the media, Sarma said 62,696 families have received the first instalment of assistance through direct bank transfers. He added that district administrations are continuing the verification process and the number of beneficiaries is expected to reach around 75,000 in the coming days.
The Chief Minister said the government is ready to release financial assistance to another 15,000 families once the remaining bank account details are submitted by the respective Deputy Commissioners.
Among the districts covered in the first phase, Sivasagar recorded the highest number of beneficiaries with 35,298 families, followed by Charaideo (19,883), Jorhat (4,922) and Golaghat (2,593).
During his visit to Nepali Khuti village in Sivasagar district, Sarma reviewed the progress of relief operations and met residents affected by the floods. He assured them that the state government would continue supporting rehabilitation efforts until normal life is restored.
Even as relief operations continue, the human impact of the disaster remains severe. Officials confirmed that four more people lost their lives in Sivasagar on Monday, taking the overall death toll from the Upper Assam floods to 86.
Authorities, however, reported a gradual improvement in the flood situation. The number of people affected has dropped to around 1.36 lakh, indicating that floodwaters have receded in several areas over the past few days.
Relief measures remain in full swing, with 54 relief camps and distribution centres currently providing food, shelter and other essential services to 13,771 displaced residents.
Despite the improving situation, challenges remain in several locations. The Dhansiri River continues to flow above the danger mark at Numaligarh, while approximately 15,422 hectares of farmland remain submerged, posing concerns for farmers and agricultural recovery.
The latest official figures also indicate a significant improvement compared to the weekend, when nearly 1.8 lakh people across five districts were affected by the floods. Sivasagar, Charaideo and Jorhat continue to be among the districts that have suffered the greatest impact.
