Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has reiterated the state government’s focus on strengthening agricultural finance and improving economic opportunities for farmers, stating that the farming community remains central to the vision of a prosperous and self-reliant Assam.

In a post on X, Sarma emphasised the importance of strengthening agricultural credit and expanding access to finance so that farmers can grow their businesses and contribute to the state’s development. His message highlights the role of institutional lending in supporting cultivators who need funds for seeds, fertilisers, equipment and other farming expenses.

Loan Resolution Plan Targets 3.49 Lakh KCC Accounts

A farmer loan resolution framework highlighted alongside the Chief Minister’s message targets 3.49 lakh Kisan Credit Card (KCC) accounts. According to an IANS report published on October 23, 2026, loans worth ₹1,741.15 crore have been covered under the initiative.

The framework is intended to help eligible farmers address overdue loans and regain access to institutional credit. The reported arrangement involves sharing loan resolution costs among the government, farmers and banks. Infrastructure Investment to Support Agricultural Growth

Improving agricultural infrastructure is another priority highlighted in the accompanying graphics. Better storage, processing facilities and market connectivity can help farmers manage post-harvest losses and improve access to buyers.

The Agriculture Infrastructure Fund is a central government initiative designed to support investment in post-harvest management infrastructure and community farming assets. Its broader objectives include strengthening agricultural supply chains and improving the efficiency of the farm sector.

The graphics also highlight a PepsiCo–bank collaboration intended to connect potato farmers with cultivation finance and quality agricultural inputs. Such partnerships can potentially help growers access resources and strengthen links between farming and markets. However, details of the participating bank, the scheme’s eligibility criteria and its implementation arrangements require confirmation from the organisations involved.

Strengthening Financial Access for Farmers

Access to formal credit can help farmers reduce their dependence on informal borrowing and plan agricultural activities more effectively. Timely financing is particularly important when cultivators need to purchase inputs before sowing or invest in equipment and other farm-related requirements.

The government’s broader agricultural credit measures include the expansion of Kisan Credit Card coverage and support for eligible agricultural borrowers. Sarma’s latest message underscores the importance of combining financial access with improved infrastructure and stronger market opportunities. The effectiveness of these efforts will ultimately depend on implementation, the accessibility of credit for eligible farmers and the extent to which support translates into sustainable improvements in agricultural productivity and rural livelihoods.
