Guwahati: A suspected interstate vehicle theft network has come under further scrutiny in Guwahati after police arrested two more alleged members of the gang, taking the total number of arrests in the case to nine.
The latest action was carried out by an East Guwahati Police District (EGPD) team from Basistha Police Station. The arrested individuals have been identified as Raju Deka alias Petla of Sarthebari and Jun Deka alias Boltu of Hagrabari.
According to Guwahati Police, both suspects are allegedly connected with eight incidents of car theft reported from several locations, including Chandmari, Panjabari, Noonmati, Panikhaiti, Jalukbari, Maligaon and Dharapur.
Police also recovered equipment that was allegedly used during vehicle thefts. The seized items include a master key, an Allen key, a screwdriver and a wrench.
Investigators suspect that the stolen vehicles were not confined to the local market. Police said the gang allegedly moved the vehicles to a neighbouring state after stealing them and sold them there.
The two arrests are part of a broader investigation into the vehicle-lifting network. Guwahati Police said the operation has so far resulted in the arrest of nine alleged members, while efforts are continuing to establish the full extent of the network and identify others who may have been involved.
Legal proceedings have been initiated against the arrested persons, and further investigation is underway.
