Guwahati: Questions have been raised over the handling of deceased patients at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) after an unidentified body was reportedly placed on a public walkway inside the hospital premises on Friday morning, drawing objections from patients, attendants and visitors.

According to eyewitnesses, the body, wrapped in a white cloth, was brought out from the hospital’s Medicine Department and placed along a pathway frequently used by people moving through the hospital campus. The incident attracted the attention of those present, many of whom questioned why the body had not been taken directly to the mortuary or another designated facility.

Several bystanders reportedly objected to the manner in which the body was being handled, expressing concern that it had been left in an area accessible to the public.

Following the objections, the body was later shifted to another location within the hospital premises.

The incident has raised questions over the hospital’s standard operating procedures for transporting and handling deceased patients, with visitors calling for greater adherence to established protocols to ensure dignity for the deceased and to avoid causing distress to patients and attendants.

No official statement had been issued by the hospital authorities regarding the incident at the time of filing this report.
