Northeast Frontier Railway has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati to jointly develop an advanced onboard monitoring system aimed at strengthening railway safety and improving track maintenance across the network.

According to an official statement, the proposed system will function as a plug-and-play onboard vibration IMU-GPS event camera solution capable of monitoring railway track conditions in real time. The technology is expected to support faster detection of abnormalities and help railway authorities respond quickly to potential safety concerns.

The system will combine Internal Measurement Unit (IMU) sensors, GPS-based tracking and event-camera technology to continuously analyse track conditions with high precision. Officials said the technology has been designed for easy installation in locomotives and coaches without requiring major structural modifications, making it suitable for deployment across a wider railway fleet.

The onboard solution will also enable continuous mapping of track defects and generate real-time alerts whenever irregularities or unusual vibrations are detected. Railway authorities believe this can significantly improve preventive monitoring and reduce the chances of operational disruptions.

The collaboration between Northeast Frontier Railway and Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati is expected to promote predictive and condition-based maintenance practices, reducing dependence on manual inspections and routine checks.

Officials stated that the initiative would improve operational efficiency, enhance reliability of railway infrastructure and strengthen passenger safety through data-driven monitoring systems.

The project also highlights efforts to encourage indigenous technological development through cooperation between Indian Railways and leading academic institutions. Railway officials said the partnership marks an important step towards modernising railway safety systems using advanced monitoring and real-time analytics.
