Actor-turned-politician and C. Joseph Vijay officially assumed office as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on Sunday, ushering in a new political era in the state after the victory of his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).
The swearing-in ceremony was held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai, where Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar administered the oath of office and secrecy to Vijay before a massive gathering of supporters, political leaders, and celebrities.
Along with Vijay, nine ministers were also inducted into the new cabinet as part of the council of ministers. The event marked a major political transformation in Tamil Nadu, bringing an end to nearly 60 years of alternating rule between the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK).
Several prominent leaders from across the country attended the ceremony, including Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi. The swearing-in function also witnessed the presence of leading film personalities, senior political figures, party workers, and thousands of enthusiastic supporters.
Due to the large turnout, the Chennai City Police implemented extensive security measures around the venue. Authorities intensified vehicle checks, tightened access control, and deployed heavy police personnel in and around the stadium to ensure smooth conduct of the ceremony.
Special seating arrangements were made for distinguished guests attending the event. Vijay’s parents, veteran filmmaker S.A. Chandrasekhar and Shobha Chandrasekhar, were seated prominently in the front row. Actress Trisha Krishnan and her mother also occupied seats in the same section, attracting significant attention from fans and media personnel present at the venue.
Vijay assumed office after the TVK-led alliance secured the backing of 120 MLAs in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, comfortably surpassing the majority mark required to form the government.
Political observers believe Vijay’s rise to power signals a major shift in Tamil Nadu politics, with the actor-turned-leader emerging as a new force in the state’s political landscape.
