Guwahati: Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) has taken up discussions on strengthening its robotic surgery capabilities, with senior medical officials and faculty members holding an interaction with Dr Arvind Kumar, Chairman of the Institute of Chest Surgery, Chest Oncosurgery and Lung Transplantation at Medanta Hospital.

The meeting focused on the scope of advanced surgical technologies and ways to develop robotic-assisted procedures at GMCH. Discussions also covered knowledge sharing, clinical mentoring and the practical aspects of expanding minimally invasive surgical services.

Officials from the Medical Education and Research Department, along with the Principal-cum-Chief Superintendent and Superintendent of GMCH, participated in the meeting. More than 20 faculty members representing the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS), Urology, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and Surgery departments also attended the interaction.

Dr Arvind Kumar, who has extensive experience in minimally invasive and robotic thoracic surgery, shared his expertise on the clinical and operational aspects of introducing and strengthening robotic surgical services at the medical institution.

The interaction provided an opportunity for GMCH faculty to exchange knowledge with an experienced specialist in robotic and minimally invasive surgery, with discussions aimed at improving the hospital’s capacity to adopt advanced surgical techniques.

The initiative comes as major medical institutions increasingly explore robotic-assisted surgery and other technology-driven approaches to improve precision, minimise surgical trauma and expand treatment options for complex procedures.

The discussions at GMCH are expected to contribute to the institution’s efforts to further develop advanced surgical facilities and specialised medical services in Assam.
