Assam Assembly Budget Session Scheduled from July 6; Dr Habbey Teron Set to Contest for Deputy Speaker’s Post

Guwahati: Preparations are underway for the upcoming Budget Session of the Assam Legislative Assembly, which is scheduled to be held from July 6 to July 31. According to the provisional business programme released by the Assembly Secretariat, the session will comprise 16 working days.

A key highlight of the session will be the presentation of the State Budget for the 2026-27 financial year by Finance Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah on July 10.

Ahead of the session, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that BJP MLA Dr Habbey Teron from the Amri (ST) constituency will be the ruling NDA’s nominee for the post of Deputy Speaker of the Assembly.

Sharing the announcement on X, the Chief Minister described Dr Teron as a representative of the aspirations of Assam’s tribal communities. He said the first-time legislator and medical professional would help strengthen the representation of the hill districts, particularly Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao, in the legislative process.

Dr Teron was elected from the newly created Amri (ST) constituency in West Karbi Anglong, securing victory over Independent candidate Bikram Hanse by a margin of 23,910 votes in the recent Assembly elections.

The election for the Deputy Speaker’s post is expected to be conducted during the Budget Session. Earlier, BJP leader Ranjeet Kumar Dass was elected Speaker during the inaugural session of the 16th Assam Legislative Assembly.

The NDA alliance registered a commanding victory in the Assembly elections, winning 102 seats in the 126-member House. The BJP secured 82 seats, while its allies AGP and BPF won 10 seats each.
