A fresh appeal for restraint has come from Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma following a recent incident along the disputed Assam-Arunachal Pradesh boundary.
Sarma has urged residents of both states to avoid confrontation and allow the governments to address the remaining border differences through talks and mutual cooperation. He emphasised that the people of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh share longstanding relationships that should not be affected by disputes over administrative boundaries.
According to the Chief Minister, substantial progress has already been achieved in settling the inter-state boundary issue through negotiations. However, the dispute involving 52 villages remains unresolved, and discussions between the two state governments are continuing.
Sarma stressed that maintaining peace along the boundary is essential while the remaining issues are being addressed through the established dialogue process.
Meanwhile, efforts were also made at the ministerial level to address the latest incident. Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu spoke with Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu after the reported skirmish along the disputed area.
Khandu reportedly assured Pegu that the incident would be investigated and that action would be taken against those found responsible.
The Assam-Arunachal boundary dispute has remained a longstanding issue between the neighbouring northeastern states. Both governments have in recent years focused on resolving differences through negotiations instead of allowing local disputes to escalate.
With some sections of the boundary still under discussion, the latest appeal from Assam’s Chief Minister underlines the need for restraint on the ground and continued political engagement between the two states.
