Guwahati, October 24, 2026: Assam has achieved a significant milestone in specialised healthcare, with Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) successfully completing a liver transplant surgery lasting approximately 16 hours. The achievement marks the first successful liver transplant in a government hospital in the Northeast, according to Assam Health Minister Ashok Singhal.
Singhal announced the development through posts on X, describing the operation as a major advancement for the state’s public healthcare system. The surgery was performed on the night of October 23 and was led by Dr. Senthil Kumar, according to media reports. The complex procedure required the coordinated efforts of doctors, specialists and allied clinical teams.
The Health Minister credited Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma’s leadership and said the state government had begun taking strategic steps in 2025 to establish advanced transplant infrastructure in Assam. He described the successful operation as the outcome of those efforts and an important step towards bringing specialised medical treatment closer to patients in the state.
The development is particularly significant for patients requiring complex liver treatment, as access to specialised facilities within Assam could reduce the need to travel to other parts of the country for medical care. Establishing and strengthening transplant services in government hospitals also has the potential to widen access to advanced treatment through the public healthcare system.
Singhal said the achievement was only the beginning of the government’s efforts to expand specialised healthcare services. The successful procedure at GMCH represents a major step in Assam’s ongoing efforts to strengthen medical infrastructure and improve the availability of advanced treatment for people across the state and the wider Northeast.
