Saitual, August 18: A suspected drug trafficking attempt was foiled in Mizoram after Assam Rifles and Mizoram Police jointly recovered heroin worth an estimated ₹8.85 crore from a vehicle in Ngopa, Saitual district.
The operation was conducted on August 16 following specific intelligence inputs received from a sister agency. Acting on the information, personnel from the two forces launched a coordinated operation in the area and intercepted the vehicle.
A search led to the recovery of 1.180 kg of Heroin No. 4, packed across 109 soap cases. According to the Assam Rifles, the suspected contraband had been hidden in a specially modified compartment behind the vehicle’s rear number plate, apparently in an attempt to evade detection.
One person was apprehended during the operation, and the vehicle was also seized.
The recovered narcotics, along with the vehicle and other items, were subsequently handed over to the Mizoram Police. Further investigation and legal proceedings are being carried out under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
The latest seizure comes amid continued enforcement efforts by security agencies to curb drug trafficking and smuggling activities in Mizoram and other parts of the Northeast.
Authorities are expected to investigate the source of the consignment, its intended destination and the possible involvement of other individuals in the suspected trafficking network.
