Guwahati, August 20: An academic journey that remained incomplete for six decades finally came full circle on Wednesday when former Mizoram Chief Minister and Mizo National Front president Zoramthanga formally received his graduation certificate from Gauhati University.
The occasion was part of a Special Lecture-cum-Interactive Programme held at the Phanidhar Dutta Seminar Hall on the Gauhati University campus. The programme was jointly organised by the Gauhati University Institute of North East India Studies (GUINEIS) and the Omeo Kumar Das Institute of Social Change and Development (OKDISCD).
For Zoramthanga, however, the event was more than an academic ceremony.
He had appeared for his B.A. examination in 1966 from D.M. College, Imphal, which was then under Gauhati University. Soon afterwards, his life took an unexpected turn as he became associated with the underground Mizo National Front movement led by Laldenga.
As a result, the certificate that should have marked the completion of his academic journey remained uncollected.
Six decades later, Gauhati University formally handed over the graduation certificate, bringing a long-delayed chapter of his student life to a close.
Lecture Traces Mizoram’s Journey from Conflict to Peace
The programme also provided Zoramthanga with an opportunity to reflect on the remarkable political and historical journey that followed his student years.
Delivering a special lecture titled “From Guerrilla Fighter to a Peacemaker,” he spoke about Mizoram’s transformation from the period of the MNF movement and conflict to the achievement of peace and statehood.
The lecture was based on his recently published book, From Guerrilla Fighter to Chief Minister, published by Penguin Random House India.
Drawing from his personal experiences, Zoramthanga reflected on the events that shaped both his own life and Mizoram’s political history. His journey eventually took him from the underground movement into mainstream democratic politics, including three terms as Chief Minister of Mizoram.
A Personally Significant Moment
In his message following the programme, Zoramthanga said he deeply valued receiving the certificate despite the passage of 60 years.
While the academic qualification itself may not appear extraordinary, he said the circumstances behind the decades-long delay made the occasion particularly meaningful to him.
He thanked Gauhati University and the organisers for inviting him to the programme and for formally presenting him with the certificate after so many years.
Zoramthanga also expressed his appreciation to Dr. R. Lalthangliana, MLA and Senior Vice President of the Mizo National Front, as well as leaders of the MNF General Headquarters and Mizo National Youth Front Headquarters who accompanied him during the visit.
The programme thus brought together two defining periods of Zoramthanga’s life: a young student appearing for his university examination in 1966 and a veteran political leader returning to Gauhati University 60 years later to receive the certificate he had left behind.
What began as a delayed academic formality ultimately became a symbolic moment, reconnecting Zoramthanga with the starting point of a journey that went on to become closely intertwined with Mizoram’s own transition from conflict to peace.
