With the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections just two months away, the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) has turned into the epicentre of political activity in Assam.

Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma has been camping in the region over the past few days, addressing multiple public meetings and engaging with local communities. On the other hand, APCC president and MP Gaurav Gogoi is also actively campaigning and was present in Udalguri today.

Final Voter List on August 18
The electoral roll preparation for the upcoming BTC election is currently in progress. The final photo electoral roll is set to be published on August 18, 2025. Chief Minister Sarma has indicated that the BTC elections are likely to be held in September 2025.

Parties Gear Up for Solo Battles
In a significant development, all major parties — including the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and the Congress — have decided to contest the elections independently. Even the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) is expected to field candidates in select constituencies.

This election marks the last major political showdown before the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, making it a critical battleground for all major players.

BJP, UPPL, BPF Intensify Campaigns
CM Sarma held campaign events in Goreswar today and was in Kokrajhar yesterday, showing a clear focus on consolidating BJP’s presence in the BTR. He has made several visits to the region in recent weeks to energize the party base.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi addressed a public meeting in Udalguri, in addition to meeting with various local communities.

State BJP president Dilip Saikia, speaking to the media, said:

“We’ve appointed observers for the BTC poll. Based on their reports, we’ll take strategic decisions. We are entering the poll with a winning mindset.”

Both the UPPL and the BPF are also actively campaigning and working on voter outreach to secure a strong footing in the upcoming elections.

Previous BTC Poll Recap
The last BTC election was held in two phases on December 7 and 10, 2020. The results for the 40-member council were as follows:

  • UPPL: 12 seats
  • BJP: 9 seats
  • BPF: 17 seats
  • Congress: 1 seat
  • Gana Suraksha Party (GSP): 1 seat

Following the election, the UPPL formed the council with support from the BJP.

High Stakes and Tight Contest Expected
As political activity continues to intensify, all eyes are now on September 2025, when the BTC poll will test the strength and strategies of Assam’s key political forces. With each party contesting solo and voter sentiment evolving rapidly, a closely fought battle is expected in the BTR.
