Guwahati, July 26: In a significant step towards environmental sustainability, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is set to transform Guwahati railway station into a fully plastic-recyclable hub by this Independence Day. The initiative aims to combat plastic pollution and promote eco-friendly practices across the railway network.

NFR’s Chief Public Relations Officer, Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, informed that the railway is working in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Guwahati and the Assam Pollution Control Board (PCBA) to formulate a detailed action plan. The task of preparing the project proposal has been assigned to M/s Kusum Udyog, a recycling agency approved by PCBA.

Sharma added, “The agenda includes a thorough review of existing waste disposal practices, identification of high-impact plastic use areas, and designing a joint action strategy to reduce single-use plastics and encourage sustainable practices.”

As part of the project, all plastic waste generated at the station will be systematically collected, shredded, washed, segregated, and then recycled in compliance with environmental norms.

To increase public participation and awareness, the Scouts and Guides of NFR are actively conducting outreach programmes. These include placard campaigns, street plays, and drama performances aimed at educating passengers and staff on the harmful effects of plastic pollution and the importance of proper waste management.

This eco-conscious move by NFR marks a bold step towards a cleaner and greener Guwahati, aligning with the broader national goal of reducing plastic waste and promoting sustainable development.
