GUWAHATI: Former Gauhati High Court judge Justice Biplab Kumar Sharma has raised serious concerns over the presence of foreign nationals in Assam’s electoral rolls. He warned that systemic lapses have allowed even individuals previously declared as foreigners to obtain Indian passports and contest elections.

Justice Sharma highlighted significant gaps in coordination between the Election Commission, police, and NRC authorities, emphasizing that faulty verification processes have led to the issuance of official documents to ineligible individuals. He cited instances where declared foreigners were granted official identification due to these errors, posing a threat to the integrity of Assam’s democratic process.

Urging immediate action, Justice Sharma called for a thorough revision of electoral rolls and transparent, coordinated efforts to strengthen voter verification systems and restore public trust in the electoral process.
