In a significant health initiative, Education Minister Ranoj Pegu inaugurated a Sickle Cell Screening Centre at Atta Bari Tea Estate in Sivasagar district. The centre aims to address the growing concern of Sickle Cell Anaemia, a genetic disorder commonly found among the tea tribe communities of Assam.
The Minister highlighted that the state government is committed to early detection and prevention of this disease. “The Government aims to screen the tea tribe population across the state to identify genetic carriers and implement targeted measures to control and prevent the spread of this disease,” he stated in a post on X.
The screening centre will provide free testing and counselling services, enabling health workers to identify carriers at an early stage. This step will help in formulating long-term strategies to reduce the prevalence of the disorder within vulnerable communities.
Health officials believe that such initiatives will not only raise awareness but also pave the way for early treatment and better disease management across Assam’s tea estates.
