Guwahati, November 3: Assam’s renowned flutist and music director Dipak Sarma passed away on Monday morning, November 3, at 6:15 AM, marking an irreparable loss to the world of art and culture.
Sarma, celebrated for his soulful compositions and enchanting flute performances, had been undergoing treatment in Guwahati before being shifted to Rela Hospital, Chennai, where he had been on ventilator support for the past few days. Despite medical efforts, the revered artist breathed his last, leaving behind a void in Assam’s musical fraternity.
A versatile and innovative musician, Dipak Sarma’s work spanned across films, albums, and television. He composed music for several acclaimed Assamese films such as Jonky Panoi and Jatinga Ityadi, and was recently working on his upcoming project Luitak Vetibo Kune.
His musical albums — including Story of Love (Raaga and Rocks International) and Beyond the Horizon — reflected his deep understanding of melody and his ability to blend Indian classical and contemporary music seamlessly.
Sarma’s creative excellence was not confined to the regional stage. He composed music for national television serials like Karm and Wazir on Zee TV, and performed in instrumental jugalbandis for Kaleidoscope on Star Plus, earning widespread appreciation for his artistry.
Throughout his illustrious career, he received numerous honours, including the NETV Best Musician Award (2006), the Sangeet Prabha Award (2007), and the Azim Hazarika Award presented by the Sivsagar Press Club.
Dipak Sarma’s passing marks the end of an era in Assam’s cultural landscape. His music continues to resonate through the hearts of his admirers, inspiring generations of musicians and music lovers alike.
