Lakhimpur (Assam): Assam Education and Tribal Affairs Minister Ranoj Pegu on Friday inaugurated a Tribal Rest House in Lakhimpur town, constructed by the Tribal Affairs (Plains) Department to provide accommodation and basic support facilities for tribal students and visitors coming from remote areas.

The newly built facility has been developed at an estimated cost of ₹2 crore and aims to address long-standing difficulties faced by people from tribal communities who travel to Lakhimpur for education, official work, medical treatment, and other purposes.

Sharing the development on social media platform X, Minister Ranoj Pegu said the rest house would serve as a supportive space for tribal students and individuals visiting the town from distant rural regions.

Support Facility for Tribal Communities

Officials said the rest house has been designed to provide temporary accommodation and essential amenities, particularly for students from tribal communities who often travel long distances to attend educational institutions or appear for examinations in Lakhimpur.

Many tribal residents from interior villages frequently visit district headquarters for administrative work, healthcare services, and academic purposes. However, the lack of affordable accommodation often creates challenges for them. The newly inaugurated facility aims to bridge this gap by offering a convenient and safe place to stay.

The project was implemented by the Tribal Affairs (Plains) Department, Government of Assam as part of the state government’s effort to strengthen welfare infrastructure for indigenous and tribal communities.

Improving Access to Education and Services

Minister Pegu highlighted that such infrastructure plays an important role in improving access to education and public services for students and families from remote areas.

Lakhimpur serves as an important educational and administrative centre in Upper Assam. Students from various tribal-dominated regions travel to the town for higher studies, competitive examinations, and academic training. The availability of a dedicated rest house will help reduce their accommodation difficulties during short visits.

The facility is also expected to benefit tribal residents who travel to the town for government-related work or medical appointments.

Focus on Inclusive Development

The inauguration of the rest house reflects the Assam government’s continued focus on inclusive development and support for tribal communities. Over the years, the Tribal Affairs Department has taken several initiatives aimed at improving educational access, social welfare infrastructure, and livelihood opportunities for tribal populations across the state.

Local residents and community leaders welcomed the initiative, stating that the rest house will provide much-needed support for students and visitors coming from far-flung areas of the district and neighbouring regions.

The project is expected to become an important support facility for tribal communities, helping them access education, healthcare, and administrative services more conveniently while visiting Lakhimpur.
