Guwahati, March 24: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday welcomed the inclusion of the historic Charaideo Moidams in the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage Site list, calling it a proud moment for the state and a tribute to Assam’s rich cultural legacy.
In a post on X, the Chief Minister highlighted that the recognition honours the 600-year-old heritage of the Ahom kingdom. He described the development as a “fitting tribute” to the glorious legacy of the Ahoms, whose rule shaped Assam’s history for nearly six centuries.

Historical Significance of Charaideo Moidams
The Charaideo Moidams, located in Assam’s Charaideo district, are ancient burial mounds of Ahom royalty and nobility. Often referred to as the “Pyramids of Assam,” these structures reflect the unique funerary traditions and architectural practices of the Ahom dynasty.
Historians consider the site one of the most significant archaeological landmarks in the Northeast. The Moidams date back over 600 years and symbolize the socio-political and cultural ethos of the Ahom era.

Promote Assam’s cultural identity on a global platform
Officials also noted that the recognition will bring greater investment in infrastructure and heritage management around the site.
A Landmark Moment for Assam
