Guwahati: A police operation in Guwahati has led to the seizure of a large consignment of rice allegedly diverted from the Public Distribution System (PDS), exposing what investigators suspect to be an interstate smuggling operation. One person has been arrested in connection with the case.
The raid was conducted by personnel of the East Guwahati Police District (EGPD) from Basistha Police Station, who intercepted a truck at Lalmati during a targeted operation. The vehicle, bearing registration number AS01KC0792, was reportedly transporting rice suspected to have been illegally siphoned off from the government’s subsidised food distribution scheme.
Police recovered 200 bags of PDS rice from the truck during the inspection. Initial findings indicate that the consignment was being transported from Barpeta district and was allegedly destined for Meghalaya.
The driver of the vehicle, identified as Asuruddin Miya (30), a resident of Sarthebari in Barpeta district, was taken into custody. Authorities have registered a case and initiated legal proceedings against the accused.
Investigators are now examining how the rice was diverted from the Public Distribution System and whether the seized consignment was part of a larger network involved in the illegal transportation and sale of subsidised food grains. Police are also working to identify other individuals who may have played a role in the alleged racket.
The seizure highlights the continued vigilance of the Guwahati Police in preventing the misuse of government welfare resources and disrupting illegal supply chains that deprive eligible beneficiaries of essential commodities. The investigation remains in progress, and officials have indicated that further action may follow based on the evidence gathered.
