Guwahati, August 21: Emphasising the invaluable role of elderly people in society, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday extended his greetings to senior citizens on the occasion of World Senior Citizens Day.
In a message shared on social media, the Chief Minister acknowledged the experience, wisdom and sacrifices of older generations, saying their contributions have played a significant role in shaping society.
Sarma said that caring for senior citizens and ensuring their well-being remains an important priority of the Assam government. He reiterated the government’s commitment to creating an environment in which elderly citizens can live with dignity, care and the support they require.
The Chief Minister also referred to initiatives introduced for the welfare of senior citizens and their families. Among the measures highlighted was the provision of special leave for government employees to spend time with and care for their ageing parents.
According to Sarma, such initiatives reflect the government’s broader approach towards strengthening family support and recognising the importance of caring for elderly members of society.
He said the state government would continue working to improve support mechanisms and introduce meaningful measures for the welfare of senior citizens across Assam.
The message came as World Senior Citizens Day was observed on August 21, drawing attention to the contributions of older people and the need to ensure their dignity, security and well-being.
Through his message, the Chief Minister called attention to the responsibility of both society and government in recognising the role of senior citizens and ensuring that they continue to receive respect, care and adequate support.
