Shillong, Meghalaya: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma inaugurated the Nabon Memorial Home at Mawïong Rim in East Khasi Hills, marking a significant step towards providing care and protection for destitute and abandoned women in the state.
Sharing the development through a post on X (formerly Twitter), Sangma described the newly inaugurated facility as “a sanctuary of hope and compassion.” The home is designed to offer a safe and secure environment where vulnerable women can live with dignity, access basic needs, and receive emotional and social support.
The Chief Minister emphasized that the initiative reflects the government’s continued focus on inclusive welfare and community-driven support systems. “This Home will serve as a sanctuary of hope and compassion, welcoming and caring for destitute and abandoned women of the community, ensuring they have a safe place to live with dignity, security, and care,” Sangma stated.
₹25 Lakh Financial Boost Announced
In a major boost to the initiative, Sangma announced a financial grant of ₹25 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Special Development Fund (CMSDF). The funding is expected to strengthen infrastructure, operational capacity, and the overall sustainability of the shelter.
“Happy to announce that ₹25 lakhs will be sanctioned from the Chief Minister’s Special Development Fund (CMSDF) to support this Home,” he added in his post.
Tribute to Ka Nabon’s Legacy
The naming of the facility as Nabon Memorial Home carries historical and cultural significance. Sangma highlighted that the home is named after Ka Nabon, regarded as the first Christian woman to embrace the faith in the Khasi Hills. He described the tribute as a reflection of “courage, faith, and service,” aligning with the values the home aims to uphold.
Community-Led Initiative Praised
The project has been spearheaded by the Jingiaseng Kynthei Shillong Ri-Lum Presbytery in collaboration with the Shillong Ri-Lum Presbytery. Sangma commended both organizations for their commitment to social welfare and community upliftment.
He extended his heartfelt congratulations to the groups for undertaking what he termed a “noble initiative,” acknowledging their role in promoting compassion, care, and service through faith-based community engagement.
Focus on Social Welfare
The inauguration of the Nabon Memorial Home underscores Meghalaya’s ongoing efforts to address social vulnerabilities, particularly among women facing abandonment and hardship. With institutional support and community participation, the facility is expected to play a vital role in rehabilitation and empowerment.
The initiative also reflects a broader push by the state government to collaborate with local organizations in delivering grassroots-level welfare services, ensuring that marginalized sections receive the care and dignity they deserve.
