Shillong, April 22: Conrad K Sangma held a detailed interaction with traditional village heads, known as Rangbah Shnong, to address pressing grassroots issues affecting communities across Meghalaya.
The meeting, which also included Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong and Minister Sosthenes Sohtun, focused on multiple sectors ranging from water supply to agriculture and infrastructure development.
During the discussion, community leaders raised concerns about the implementation and sustainability of water sources under the Jal Jeevan Mission. Issues related to inconsistent supply and maintenance challenges were highlighted, indicating the need for improved monitoring and support systems.
Agriculture and allied activities also featured prominently in the dialogue. Local poultry and pig farmers expressed distress over falling market prices, which have significantly impacted their livelihoods. Particular concern was voiced over the declining demand and sale of locally reared pigs, a traditional and economically important sector in the state.
Responding to these issues, Sangma reaffirmed the government’s commitment to promoting local pig farming and enhancing institutional support for farmers. He emphasized the importance of strengthening market linkages and ensuring better price realisation for local produce.
The interaction further covered challenges in the power sector, though specific details were not disclosed. Additionally, discussions were held regarding the proposed express highway project, which is expected to play a crucial role in improving connectivity and boosting economic activities in the region.
Sangma described the meeting as “productive” and reiterated the government’s intent to maintain continuous engagement with community leaders. He assured that the concerns raised would be taken up seriously, with efforts directed towards practical solutions that benefit local communities.
The Chief Minister expressed optimism about collaborative efforts moving forward, stating that such interactions are vital for inclusive development and effective governance at the grassroots level.
