Guwahati (Assam): The Assam Government has distributed 1.34 lakh metric tonnes (MT) of free rice to nearly 70 lakh families across the state during July under its food security programme. The announcement was made by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in a post on X, where he highlighted the government’s continued efforts to support eligible households with essential food grains.
Describing the initiative as part of the government’s commitment to “Anna Sewa Se Jan Sewa,” the Chief Minister said the programme reflects the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to strengthen food security and ensure that essential commodities reach vulnerable families across the state.
The free rice distribution was carried out through the public distribution system, benefiting lakhs of eligible households in both rural and urban areas. According to the Chief Minister, the initiative is aimed at reducing the financial burden on economically weaker sections while ensuring uninterrupted access to staple food.
In another key announcement, the Assam Government will resume the distribution of subsidised masoor dal and sugar from August 2026, expanding the range of essential commodities available under the state’s welfare programme. The move is expected to provide additional relief to beneficiaries by making essential household items more affordable.
The resumption of subsidised pulses and sugar comes as part of the government’s broader effort to strengthen food security and improve nutritional support for families covered under the scheme. Officials expect the initiative to complement the ongoing free rice programme and enhance assistance provided through the state’s public distribution network.
With nearly 70 lakh beneficiary families receiving free rice in July and subsidised masoor dal and sugar set to return next month, the programme is expected to further strengthen welfare support for economically vulnerable households across Assam.
The latest announcement underscores the state’s continued focus on food security through targeted welfare measures aimed at ensuring access to essential commodities while easing household expenditure for millions of beneficiaries.
