Guwahati, July 19: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has carried out a night-time eviction drive at Ganeshguri, removing unauthorised encroachments from public spaces as part of its ongoing efforts to improve traffic flow, enhance pedestrian safety and maintain civic infrastructure in the city.
The civic body said the operation was conducted on Friday night in one of Guwahati’s busiest commercial and transportation hubs, where encroachments on roadsides and footpaths have often affected the movement of commuters and vehicles.
In a post shared on X, GMC stated that the drive was undertaken to ensure the free movement of pedestrians and motorists while reclaiming public spaces from illegal occupation.
According to the municipal corporation, the enforcement exercise forms part of a broader campaign to keep roads, footpaths and other public areas accessible and free from unauthorised encroachments. The corporation said such drives are intended to improve urban mobility while supporting road safety and better management of civic spaces.
Officials said conducting the operation during the night enabled enforcement teams to carry out the exercise with minimal disruption to daily traffic and commercial activities in the locality.
Ganeshguri serves as a key junction connecting several important parts of Guwahati and witnesses heavy vehicular movement throughout the day. The area is also a major commercial centre, making the smooth movement of pedestrians and vehicles a priority for civic authorities.
The GMC has been undertaking similar enforcement drives across different parts of the city to address encroachments affecting public infrastructure and ease congestion. The corporation has reiterated that maintaining encroachment-free roads and footpaths remains an important component of its urban management initiatives.
Appealing for public cooperation, the civic body urged residents, business owners and street vendors to refrain from occupying public land without authorisation. It said compliance with municipal regulations would help create safer roads, improve accessibility and contribute to a cleaner and more organised urban environment.
The corporation indicated that eviction drives against illegal encroachments will continue at various locations across Guwahati as part of its ongoing efforts to preserve public spaces and improve civic amenities for residents and commuters.
