Guwahati: In a major push to strengthen Assam’s dairy sector, the State Cabinet has approved the lease of 33 bighas of land to Kaira District Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union Ltd., which markets its dairy products under the AMUL brand, for the establishment of a bulk milk cooler and chilling centre in Biswanath.
The proposed facility is expected to significantly enhance the state’s dairy infrastructure by improving milk collection, storage and procurement systems while providing better support to dairy farmers across the region.
Sharing the development on X, the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) said the project will strengthen Assam’s dairy ecosystem by expanding milk procurement infrastructure, improving storage and collection facilities, promoting value addition in milk production and generating new employment opportunities.
The Biswanath facility is expected to become Assam’s second major dairy processing project after the milk processing plant at Rani in Guwahati. Officials believe the new centre will enhance the cold-chain network, reduce post-harvest milk losses and improve market access for dairy producers, ultimately benefiting thousands of farmers.
The initiative forms part of the Assam Government’s broader efforts to accelerate the state’s ‘White Revolution’ under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. By expanding modern dairy infrastructure and strengthening the milk value chain, the government aims to boost milk production, increase farmers’ incomes and move Assam closer to self-reliance in the dairy sector.
