Guwahati: Assam’s flood situation showed signs of gradual improvement on Friday, with the number of affected districts and people declining, even as thousands continue to remain impacted across the state. According to the latest figures released by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the flood death toll has risen to 98.

The latest fatality was reported from the Mahmora revenue circle in Charaideo district.

ASDMA data showed that around 1,55,849 people are currently affected by the floods, down from more than 1.68 lakh a day earlier. The number of affected districts has also fallen from 15 to 13.

Floodwaters continue to affect 33 revenue circles and 464 villages across Sivasagar, Golaghat, Nagaon, Hojai, Sonitpur, Dhemaji, Darrang, Biswanath, Kamrup Metropolitan, Lakhimpur, Udalguri, Jorhat and Charaideo districts.

Golaghat remains the worst-affected district in terms of population, with approximately 58,750 people affected. Sivasagar has reported 48,286 affected residents, while 25,259 people have been impacted in Jorhat.

Relief operations are continuing across the affected areas, with 55 relief camps currently accommodating more than 10,000 people. Authorities have also established 18 relief distribution centres to provide essential supplies to communities affected by the floods.

The situation remains a concern along some river stretches, with the Dhansiri flowing above the danger level at Golaghat town and Numaligarh. The Kushiyara River is also continuing to flow above the danger mark at Sribhumi.

The floods have caused substantial damage to agriculture and livestock. Around 10,748.64 hectares of farmland remain submerged, while more than 47,000 animals have been affected.

Damage to houses and key infrastructure, including roads and bridges, has also been reported from several flood-hit areas. Authorities continue to monitor water levels and carry out relief and restoration measures as the flood situation gradually changes across Assam.
