Longding, Arunachal Pradesh: Four cadres of the banned United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent), or ULFA(I), have surrendered before the Assam Rifles in Arunachal Pradesh’s Longding district, handing over weapons, ammunition and other war-like stores, the Indian Army said.
The surrender took place during an intelligence-led operation at Chupkhao Track in Longding, carried out under the Spear Corps of the Indian Army. The operation followed sustained surveillance, operational planning and efforts by security personnel to persuade members of the insurgent group to abandon violence.
According to the Army, the four cadres surrendered with four weapons, ammunition and other war-like materials.
The security forces described the development as a setback for ULFA(I)’s operational network in the region. The Army said the outcome reflected the combined use of intelligence-based operations and continued engagement with insurgents to encourage them to give up armed activities.
The surrender comes amid ongoing counter-insurgency efforts by the Assam Rifles and the Indian Army in areas along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh frontier. Security agencies have also been emphasising efforts to encourage insurgents to return to civilian life and join the mainstream.
The Army said its continued operations and outreach are aimed at creating conditions for insurgents to abandon violence and opt for peace and stability.
The latest surrender adds to the security forces’ efforts to disrupt insurgent networks in the Northeast while encouraging cadres willing to give up militancy to return to the mainstream.
