Assam Legislative Assembly Speaker Ranjeet Kumar Dass has defended the recent removal of certain employees, stating that there is no justification for retaining people in government offices when their services are no longer required.

Speaking to the media on the sidelines of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Mann Ki Baat’ programme in Bajali, Dass said appointments are made strictly according to administrative requirements and employees whose services are no longer needed have been relieved from their duties.

Addressing reports regarding the termination of some workers, the Speaker said several individuals had been engaged at different times under various arrangements, including master roll and casual appointments. According to him, such appointments may have been necessary at the time they were made, but the current situation no longer requires their services.

“There is no benefit in keeping people unnecessarily. Employees are appointed based on need. If there is no requirement at present, they have been released,” Dass said.

He further stated that he had come across the issue through media reports but had not yet received any formal written complaint regarding the matter. He added that if any written representation or complaint is submitted, the authorities will examine it and take action in accordance with established rules and procedures.

The remarks come amid discussions over the removal of some workers associated with government offices. Dass maintained that staffing decisions are being taken on the basis of actual requirements and administrative necessity.

Ranjeet Kumar Dass, a senior BJP leader and four-time MLA, was recently elected Speaker of the 16th Assam Legislative Assembly for a second term.
