New Delhi, May 31: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday met Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi and discussed opportunities to position Assam as a significant contributor to India’s growing defence ecosystem.

Sharing details of the meeting on social media platform X, Sarma described the interaction as “always enriching” and expressed deep admiration for the Defence Minister’s leadership, experience, and guidance.

The Chief Minister praised Rajnath Singh as a leader with immense wisdom and knowledge, stating that there is much to learn from his long and distinguished career as an administrator, public servant, and dedicated party worker. Sarma highlighted Singh’s vast experience in governance and his role in shaping key national policies over the years.

During the meeting, Sarma thanked the Defence Minister for his impactful campaign efforts during the Assam Assembly elections, acknowledging his contribution to the party’s success in the state. The Chief Minister said Singh’s support and engagement with the people of Assam had played a significant role during the election campaign.

A major focus of the discussion was Assam’s future role in India’s defence and strategic development framework. Sarma revealed that he sought Rajnath Singh’s blessings and guidance to help position Assam as an important player in the country’s defence sector in the coming years.

The move aligns with the state government’s broader vision of transforming Assam into a hub for investment, manufacturing, logistics, and strategic industries under the Centre’s Act East and self-reliance initiatives. With its strategic location in Northeast India and proximity to international borders, Assam is increasingly being viewed as a key region for defence infrastructure, industrial development, and connectivity projects.

The meeting comes at a time when the Government of India is actively promoting indigenous defence manufacturing through the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative and encouraging greater participation from states in supporting defence-related industries and infrastructure.

Political observers believe that Assam’s aspirations to become a more prominent stakeholder in the national defence ecosystem could open new avenues for investment, employment generation, technological development, and industrial growth in the region.

Sarma’s meeting with Rajnath Singh is part of his ongoing engagements with senior Union ministers and central leaders to secure greater support for Assam’s development priorities and to strengthen the state’s role in national growth initiatives.

The Chief Minister expressed confidence that with the Defence Minister’s guidance and the Centre’s support, Assam can emerge as an important contributor to India’s strategic and defence ambitions in the years ahead.
