Shillong, April 15: Conrad K Sangma chaired a series of high-level meetings with multiple departments, focusing on urban development, sports infrastructure, environmental initiatives, and cultural research, reflecting the state government’s multi-pronged approach to growth and preservation.

In a key meeting with the Urban Affairs Department, the Chief Minister reviewed ongoing beautification efforts across major towns, including Shillong, Tura, and Jowai. The discussions emphasized the importance of community participation in maintaining cleanliness and improving public spaces. Officials explored measures such as coordinated cleanliness drives, painting of both public and private properties, and strengthening waste management systems. Special attention was also given to the cleaning and rejuvenation of rivers and streams as part of a broader environmental sustainability push.

Separately, Sangma chaired a review meeting with the Sports Department to assess the state’s readiness for the upcoming National Games 2027. The review covered critical areas such as the development of sports infrastructure, arrangements for athlete accommodation, and the overall preparedness of Team Meghalaya. Officials informed that work is progressing steadily, with a focus on ensuring that Meghalaya is fully equipped to host a successful and memorable edition of the national sporting event.

In another meeting, the Chief Minister held discussions with the Forest Department and the Meghalaya Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) regarding the establishment of a proposed Centre of Excellence for Agarwood and Essential Oils. The initiative is expected to boost research, value addition, and sustainable economic opportunities linked to forest-based resources in the state.

Further underlining the government’s commitment to preserving cultural heritage, Sangma also met with the Arts and Culture Department along with research groups to review a project focusing on the historical, cultural, linguistic, and migratory origins of the Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo tribes. Researchers are currently engaged in extensive studies aimed at mapping the ancestry and origins of these indigenous communities. The Chief Minister expressed support for the initiative and conveyed optimism about the outcomes of the research.

These back-to-back meetings highlight the Meghalaya government’s integrated approach—balancing infrastructure development, environmental management, cultural preservation, and sports advancement—as it charts a forward-looking roadmap for the state.
