In a significant operation along the Indo-Myanmar border, the Assam Rifles successfully intercepted illegal cross-border currency movement in Mizoram, seizing unaccounted Myanmar currency valued at approximately ₹11.30 lakh in Indian currency.
According to an official update posted by the force on X (formerly Twitter), the operation was conducted on April 13, 2026, in coordination with local law enforcement. Troops of the Assam Rifles, working jointly with Zokhawthar Police, laid a planned ambush at General Area Crossing Point–2 in Champhai district—an area known for cross-border movement due to its proximity to Myanmar.
During the operation, security personnel intercepted an individual attempting to move with a substantial amount of undeclared Myanmar currency. Upon inspection, authorities recovered the foreign currency, which had not been declared through any legal channel. The total seized amount is estimated to be worth ₹11.30 lakh.
One Myanmar national was apprehended on the spot in connection with the case. Officials stated that the individual was taken into custody without resistance.
Following standard legal procedures, both the seized currency and the detained individual have been handed over to the local police authorities. The case is now under the jurisdiction of Zokhawthar Police Station, where further investigation and legal action are underway.
Security officials indicated that such operations are part of ongoing efforts to curb illegal cross-border activities, including smuggling and unauthorized financial transactions, which pose risks to regional stability and economic regulation.
Champhai district, located along the India-Myanmar border, has been a sensitive zone due to frequent movement across porous border points. Authorities have intensified surveillance and joint operations in the region to monitor and prevent illicit activities.
The Assam Rifles reiterated its commitment to maintaining border security and working closely with civil police to dismantle networks involved in cross-border crimes.
Further details are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses.
