Ferry Services Suspended in Guwahati as Brahmaputra Water Level Rises

Guwahati: All ferry services operating in and around Guwahati have been suspended since June 24 following a sharp and sustained rise in the water level of the Brahmaputra River. The Inland Water Transport (IWT) Department announced the suspension as a precautionary measure to ensure passenger safety amid strong river currents and unsafe navigation conditions caused by ongoing monsoon rains.

The suspension includes ferry services to and from Umananda Temple, a popular pilgrimage and tourist destination located on an islet in the middle of the Brahmaputra River. As the temple is primarily accessible by water, authorities have temporarily halted ferry operations to the island due to safety concerns.

In addition, all ferry routes connecting the north and south banks of the Brahmaputra have been suspended, affecting thousands of daily commuters who depend on water transport for their regular travel. The Brahmaputra has witnessed a significant rise in water level in recent days due to increased upstream water flow and heavy monsoon rainfall.

The Inland Water Transport Department has advised commuters to make alternative travel arrangements and monitor official notifications for updates on the restoration of ferry services once river conditions become safe for navigation.
