Guwahati, May 28: The Guwahati Police have busted an organised interstate-style criminal gang allegedly involved in cattle theft, dacoity, burglary and ATM theft activities during an investigation into a cattle theft case reported from Jayanagar.
According to a statement shared by the official X handle of Guwahati Police, the operation was carried out by a team from Basistha Police Station under the East Guwahati Police District (EGPD). The breakthrough came after police launched an investigation into the theft of cattle from a residence in Jayanagar.
During the course of the probe, police received crucial inputs that led to the identification and apprehension of seven alleged criminals linked to multiple cattle theft incidents reported from Jayanagar, Baihata Chariali and several other areas.
Police officials said the accused confessed during interrogation to stealing two cows, including a pregnant cow, from the complainant’s residence on May 19, 2026.
Investigators revealed that the gang was operating in an organised manner and used specially modified vehicles to transport stolen cattle and carry out criminal activities across different districts.
During the operation, police recovered and seized several items allegedly connected to the crimes, including:
- A Nexa Fronx vehicle without a number plate, internally modified for transporting cattle
- A wooden plank bearing fresh cow dung stains
- Cash amounting to ₹15,871
- Two knives
- Strings allegedly used during the crime
- Four mobile phones
Officials believe the seizure of the specially modified vehicle indicates a well-planned operation carried out by the gang. The investigation is also exploring possible links of the accused with other organised theft and robbery cases in Assam and neighbouring states.
The Guwahati Police stated that legal action has been initiated against all the accused persons under relevant sections of law. Further investigation is underway to identify additional members of the network and uncover the full extent of the gang’s criminal activities.
The successful crackdown has been viewed as a major step in curbing organised cattle theft and related criminal operations in and around Guwahati.
