Guwahati Police carried out a major operation against fake currency circulation and arrested one person after recovering counterfeit notes worth ₹8.8 lakh from a rented accommodation in the Azara Bharalipara area of Guwahati.
According to a post shared by Guwahati Police on X, an EGPD team from Dispur Police Station conducted the raid based on a specific input regarding suspected illegal activities being carried out from the rented premises.
During the operation, police recovered and seized 1,760 Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) of ₹500 denomination with a total face value of ₹8,80,000. The fake currency was allegedly found in the possession of Mijanur Rahman, a resident of Laluk in Lakhimpur.
Apart from the counterfeit currency, the police team also seized several other items from the location. These included nine bottles of Iodine Tincture of 400 ml each and one bottle of Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide and Chlorpheniramine Maleate Syrup of 100 ml capacity.
Police also confiscated two vehicles believed to be linked to the case — a Hyundai car bearing registration number AS 01 DY 2500 and a Baleno car with registration number AS 01 EV 2447.
Officials have not yet disclosed whether the accused was part of a larger fake currency racket operating in Assam or other neighbouring states. However, sources indicated that investigators are examining possible links connected to the circulation and distribution of counterfeit notes in the region.
Guwahati Police stated that legal action has already been initiated in connection with the seizure and arrest. Further investigation is currently underway to identify other individuals who may be involved in the alleged network.
The recovery comes amid continued efforts by Assam Police to crack down on organised criminal activities, including fake currency circulation and illegal substance-related offences, in and around Guwahati.
