IMD Issues Orange Alert as Heavy Rainfall Continues Across Assam

Amid continuing spells of rain across Assam, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted more heavy showers in isolated areas of the state over the next few days. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Guwahati has issued an Orange Alert for Assam, which will remain in effect until May 3.

According to IMD guidelines, an Orange Alert indicates that residents and authorities should remain prepared and take necessary precautions, as adverse weather conditions may affect normal life. It is the second most serious warning level after a Red Alert.

Assam has already witnessed significantly higher rainfall during the ongoing pre-monsoon season. Data released by the RMC, Guwahati, showed that the state recorded 336.6 mm rainfall between March 1 and now, which is around 37 percent above the normal average of 245.2 mm for this period.

Heavy rainfall has been reported from several districts during the last 24 hours. Goalpara received the highest rainfall at 9 cm, followed by Dhupdhara with 8 cm. Rangia and Agia AEGCL AWS recorded 7 cm each, while Gauripur AEGCL AWS and Motunga received 6 cm each.

Other areas that experienced notable rainfall include Bajali and Puthimari with 5 cm each, while Tezpur, Hazuwa, Amingaon AWS, Dhubri, and Guwahati Airport recorded 4 cm rainfall. Chandubi AWS, Manas AWS, Dudhnoi ARG, Numaligarh, Nalbari, Pagladia NERIWALM AWS, and Guwahati Airport AWS reported around 3 cm rainfall.

Moderate rainfall was also recorded in Lanka ARG, Kheronighat, Mirza Circle Office ARG, Guwahati City ARG, Matijuri ARG, Tamulpur, and Lumding.

The continuous rainfall has affected daily life in several areas, with waterlogging and traffic disruptions being reported from many parts of the state. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely as more rainfall is expected in the coming days.
