Silchar, June 28: In a major breakthrough in Assam’s ongoing anti-narcotics campaign, a late-night joint operation by the Cachar Police and the Assam Rifles led to the seizure of narcotics worth approximately ₹5 crore. Two alleged drug traffickers were arrested during the operation, according to a post on X by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Sharing details of the operation, the Chief Minister said that 942 grams of heroin and 10,000 Yaba tablets were recovered during the joint raid. He described the seizure as another significant step towards achieving a drug-free Assam and praised the coordinated efforts of Cachar Police and the Assam Rifles in carrying out the successful operation.
“Happy Sunday! Another step towards a drug-free Assam,” Sarma wrote on X, while commending the security agencies for their sustained crackdown on drug trafficking. He also lauded the relentless efforts of the Assam Police, stating that the force is “simply non-stop” in its fight against the narcotics trade.
Officials said two accused were apprehended during the operation. However, their identities and additional operational details have not yet been officially disclosed. Further investigation is underway to determine the source of the seized narcotics, identify the intended destination of the contraband, and uncover any larger drug trafficking network linked to the case.
The latest seizure adds to a series of successful anti-drug operations carried out across Assam in recent years. The state government has intensified its campaign against narcotics through coordinated operations involving the Assam Police and central security forces, particularly in districts vulnerable to cross-border drug trafficking.
The Assam Government has consistently reiterated its zero-tolerance policy against the drug menace, with law enforcement agencies continuing to strengthen surveillance and intelligence-based operations to dismantle organised drug trafficking networks operating in the region.
