Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday underlined the importance of cultivating reading habits among people, especially the younger generation, on the occasion of World Book Day.
In a message shared on X, the Assam Chief Minister reflected on the lasting impact of books in shaping individuals and society. He stated that books possess the “quiet power” to shape minds, broaden perspectives and strengthen character.
Highlighting the role of reading in building an informed and progressive society, Sarma said that a strong reading culture forms the foundation of critical thinking and intellectual growth. He urged people to nurture the habit of reading and encourage future generations to value books and literature.
“On World Book Day, I am reminded of the quiet power of books to shape minds, expand horizons and strengthen character. A reading culture is the foundation of a thinking society. Let us nurture this habit and pass on the gift of books to the next generation,” the Chief Minister wrote on X.
Observed annually on April 23, World Book Day aims to promote reading, publishing and awareness about copyright across the world. The occasion also honours celebrated literary icons such as William Shakespeare and Miguel de Cervantes, whose literary contributions continue to inspire readers globally.
Across India, schools, colleges, libraries and literary organisations mark the day through various activities including book fairs, reading sessions, storytelling programmes and awareness campaigns. These initiatives seek to encourage reading habits among children and young adults in an increasingly digital era.
The Chief Minister’s message comes at a time when educators and literary enthusiasts continue to stress the importance of balancing digital engagement with traditional reading practices. Many experts believe that regular reading not only improves knowledge and language skills but also enhances creativity, empathy and analytical thinking.
Several educational institutions and organisations in Assam also observed World Book Day with events promoting literature and reading culture among students and youth.
