Nagaon: Authorities on Thursday launched a major eviction operation inside the Laokhowa Wildlife Sanctuary in Assam’s Nagaon district to reclaim protected forest land allegedly occupied through illegal encroachments.
The district administration, supported by forest officials and security personnel, is carrying out the drive across hundreds of bighas of land within the sanctuary. The operation is primarily focused on removing alleged illegal jute cultivation from the protected forest area as part of efforts to restore the sanctuary’s ecological balance.
During the operation, heavy security has been deployed throughout the sanctuary, with police and other security forces stationed at multiple locations to prevent any untoward incidents and ensure the eviction proceeds peacefully.
Some local residents have alleged that certain forest officials had previously allowed cultivation on government land in exchange for money, claiming that no action had been taken against the farming activities until the current eviction drive was initiated. However, these allegations have not been independently verified, and the police have not made any official comment on the matter.
The eviction drive remains in progress, and officials are expected to release more information as the operation advances.
