In a continued push against cross-border smuggling, the Assam Rifles, in coordination with the Customs Preventive Force, has seized a large consignment of illegal areca nuts in Mizoram’s border district of Champhai.
According to an official statement shared by the Assam Rifles on X, the joint operation was conducted on April 13, 2026, in the General Area of Ruantlang, based on specific intelligence inputs regarding the movement of contraband in the region.
During the operation, security personnel recovered a total of 52 bags of illegally traded areca nuts. The seized consignment has been valued at approximately ₹29.12 lakh, highlighting the scale of the smuggling attempt.
Officials confirmed that the recovered goods were being transported without valid documentation, indicating a violation of trade and customs regulations. The entire consignment has since been handed over to the Customs Preventive Force in Champhai for further investigation and legal proceedings.
Authorities stated that Champhai district, which shares a porous international border with Myanmar, remains a hotspot for illegal trade activities, including the smuggling of areca nuts, foreign goods, and other contraband. The region’s terrain and informal crossing routes often make it vulnerable to such activities.
Security forces have intensified surveillance and coordinated operations in recent months to disrupt smuggling networks operating along the Indo-Myanmar border. Officials emphasized that actionable intelligence and joint enforcement efforts have been key in intercepting illegal consignments.
The Assam Rifles reiterated its commitment to maintaining border security and supporting civil agencies in curbing illicit trade, which not only affects the local economy but also undermines regulatory mechanisms.
Further investigation is underway to trace the source and intended distribution network of the seized areca nuts.
